Recommendations for your Bandcamp Friday cart
It’s Bandcamp Friday, baby, which means that Bandcamp waives its revenue share and 100% of any purchase you make on Bandcamp today will go directly to the artist!
Coincidentally, it’s also release day for our fourth audiodrama, God Under Siege. Huh! Imagine that.
If you haven’t heard already, God Under Siege is a sci-fi comedy in the tradition of Douglas Adams, brought to you by the same folks who made Ms. Shipton’s Travelling Tea Shop. So if you’re a fan of Shipton or Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, this is a MUST LISTEN.
If you’ve already purchased God Under Siege and our other fine programs—thank you very much—there are a ton of other amazing audiodramas and experimental audio works that you can support on Bandcamp. Here are just a few suggestions.
The Bird Roads
The Bird Roads! You know—the sky. This is the latest audiodrama from Ella Watts and Tin Can Audio, who previously collaborated on Camlann (also available on Bandcamp). While The Bird Roads is coming out on an RSS feed, the Bandcamp version is lightly edited to work more as a singular listening experience, which I think is the preferable way to listen to these short episodes. I love how Tin Can Audio uses Bandcamp as a premier destination for audio fiction and not an afterthought, and they are well deserving of your support on Bandcamp Friday!
Generation Crossing
Fans of Archive 81 and The Deep Vault, were you aware that creators, Dead Signals, have a whole damn show on Bandcamp? It’s an audiodrama/concept album hybrid called Generation Crossing, a sci-fi saga about an 800-year journey to a distant planet. This is exactly the kind of audio storytelling that is perfect as an album, and utilizing the format to tell a unique, movie-length story.
Fellfoul
Mulgrave Audio is a UK company that publishes its own original audiodramas on Bandcamp, CD, and vinyl. They’re classic, BBC-style radio dramas, lovingly sound designed and acted by some real radioheads (but not the real Radiohead). I’m rather partial to Fellfoul, a two-part micro-fiction drama about a woman who falls down a rabbit hole of curiosity when she discovers a cult fantasy movie was filmed in the field outside her house.
15 second tape
I need to throw at least one curveball at you every Bandcamp Friday, and this time it’s 15 second tape from Devin Burgenbauch. Over three years, Devin recorded 15-second snippets of audio on a cassette tape, never rewinding or listening back until the tape was completely spent. For any sound artists or sound designers out there, this is a fascinating experiment, full of unintentional parallels and storytelling.
TWO-THOUSAND AND LATE
Lauren Shippen’s Atypical Artists have a Bandcamp page where you can get high-quality downloads of all their shows, including the full back catalogue of the iconic Bright Sessions, if you’re so inclined. But I think you should support their recent dark comedy, Two-Thousand and Late, about a 36-year-old getting fired from their job and also possessed by a demon. I wish more audio fiction creators followed Shippen’s lead and put their series on Bandcamp—it’s a great way to make a one-off contribution and help them continue to make amazing audiodramas.
Did you make any Bandcamp Friday purchases today? I’d love to hear about them, whether that’s music, audiodrama, field recordings, or experimental stuff. Jump in the comments below or find Local Files Club on social media and just start @ing us.
